The invite comes out. The calendar invitation is sent. The dues are paid.
Yep, it’s time for another networking event. If you’re anything like me, those words have probably filled you with dread and maybe triggered a panic attack. Throughout my life, I’ve been told that networking is the key to success. It’s how you create jobs, develop relationships, and more. And apparently the only way to do that is through networking events and small talk with strangers.
For an introvert, that’s probably your worst nightmare. But don’t fear. Networking can be manageable — even if most of your efforts are done via the couch. Here’s how:
Reach out to people you know.
You know more people than you think you do. No, really, it’s all about who you know. Send emails to people in your network. You never know what a friend of a friend can do for you, and don’t be afraid to add people on LinkedIn you’ve worked with. It could turn out to be a mutually beneficial interaction.
Engage on social media.
You’ve heard about people meeting their significant others on the internet. Why can’t you meet future co-workers or get a job the same way? Follow people you are interested in learning more about and like, retweet, or reply to their content on Twitter, and comment on their pictures on Instagram. You could even join Facebook groups among people who are in similar working situations.
Make it part of your daily schedule.
According to Molly Beck’s book Reach Out, schedule time on your calendar to send emails daily. They can be short and sweet, but make it part of your routine and it will no longer seem like a big and overwhelming task.
Try scheduling one-on-one meetings.
No, seriously. It’s easier to get coffee with one person, or schedule a FaceTime chat. And you don’t have to talk about yourself the whole time. Instead, ask them about their own journey. See if you can develop a relationship with the mundane.
